The Search: Poignant drama of American cadet Clift regarding for concentration camp survivor Jandl in postwar Berlin, when the boy’s mommy despondently searches all the camps for him. Beautifully performed and directed. Cast includes Montgomery Clift, Ivan Jandl, Aline MacMahon, Jarmila Novotna, and Wendell Corey. (105 minutes, 1948)
Each Dawn I Die: Journalist Cagney is framed, and sent to the penitentiary where he meets a tough inmate, Raft. There is excellent acting all around. Cagney hits a white-hot summit with his role, however last half of film gets to be outrageously implausible. Music score by Max Steiner. Cast includes James Cagney, George Raft, George Bancroft, Jane Bryan, Maxie Rosenbloom, Stanley Ridges, Louis Jean Heydt, Abner BiOOrman, John Wray, Victor Jory, and Thurston Chamber. Dingo: An unexpected appearance by jazz trumpeter Billy Cross (Davis) in a boy’s rural town empowers him to become a musician himself. Now grown up, he still fantasies of playing for a living and honoring his lifelong hero. This friendly but dull paced tale is kindled by Miles Davis’ dynamic presence and ingratiating behavior. Cast includes Colin Friels, Miles Davis, Helen Buday, Joe Petruzzi, Bernadette Lafont, and Bernard Fresson. (108 minutes, 1991)
Murderous Maids: A new take on the infamous 1933 murder case that rocked most of France. Christine Papin (Testud) and her younger sibling Lea, like their mommy before them, work as house maids. However, Christine’s simmering resentment of her mom, her circumstance, and her administrators starts to wear on her in assorted damaging ways. Cast includes Sylvie Testud, Julie-Marie Parmentier, Isabelle Renauld, Jean-Gabriel Nordmann, and Marie Donnio. (94 minutes, 2000)
Slaughter in San Francisco: Prior cop Wong desires retribution on killer of his companion. Norris, in an aiding role, is the poor guy. Cast includes Don Wong, Ditch Norris, Sylvia Channing, Robert Jones, and Dan Ivan. (87 minutes, 1981)
Play Time: Hulot (Tati) drifts through an unrecognizable modern Paris of steel and glass skyscrapers. Scene and noise gags abound in this superbly created film. The General Died at Dawn: Fine, altruospheric drama of Oriental enthrall, with mercenary Cooper falling in love with foreign agent Carroll when fighting sinister warlord Tamiroff. Cast includes Gary Cooper, Madeleine Carroll, Akim Tamiroff, Dudley Digges, Porter Chamber, and William Frawley. (97 minutes, 1936)
